Argentina Tips

Wednesday (December 22) was a travel day from Buenos Aires to El Calafate so I decided to use this as an opportunity to discuss some Argentina lessons learned.

1)  Getting cash can be a pain.  It seems the entire economy here runs on cash.  Dale and I thought we could just use ATMs to get cash as needed, especially in the capital.  There are ATMs available, but the trouble is that they are frequently out of cash.  Our lesson is that you should bring US Dollars and exchange them upon arrival or seek out ATMs on smaller streets rather then major thoroughfares.

2)  In spite of what you might read online, Argentina uses “Australian” style power outlets.  Several of us were duped into thinking they used the same outlet style as North America.  Adapters are easily available for a couple of bucks so it wasn’t a big deal.

3)  The airlines run late, but arrival within 20 minutes of published times is called “on time”.  Nick and Vimal took several flights which all ran late and the flight for all of us to El Calafate was also late.  All of our luggage made it and the trip itself was pleasant so being a little late didn’t bother anyone.

Upon arrival and checking into our hotel, the next order of business was to eat.  We went to an “all-you-can-eat” parilla (grill) which wasn’t anything special, but it was good enough after traveling most of the day.
